Thames Tideway Stated Preference Study – Phase 2

Thames Water Utilities Ltd, 2006

Tideway is the tidal part of River Thames. The objective of this study was to estimate Thames Water customers’ willingness to pay for improvements to reduce discharges from Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) into the Tideway. CSOs happen when, due to heavy rainfall, London sewage system cannot hold the volume of rainwater and sewage and excess volume is released to the river. A contingent valuation survey was designed to assess this, the results of which were inputted into a cost-benefit analysis. Defra and other relevant departments committed to the investments in March 2007.
