The second UKNEE seminar of 2011 took place on Wednesday, 29th June, Room 808, Nobel House, Defra, Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR .
The Natural Environment White Paper was published by Defra on 7th June 2011, following on from the recent publication of the UK National Ecosystem Assessment, the first independent assessment of the state and trends in UK ecosystems. As the first White Paper on the natural environment in 20 years, this seminar provides an overview of the evidence and analysis underpinning the key actions and reforms. Speakers
Helen Dunn is a senior economic adviser in Defra currently working across a range of natural environment policy areas. In 2007 Defra published an introductory guide to valuing ecosystem services and recent work has included developing practical tools for environmental valuation for use in policy appraisal. Another key area of work includes developing evidence and analysis on payments for ecosystem services and wider use of ecosystem markets.M
Colin Smith is an economic adviser in Defra, working since November 2010 with Helen on natural environment policy. He was lead author of the accompanying Analysis and Evidence Paper to the Natural Environment White Paper and also co-authored the overarching Impact Assessment for the White Paper. Other current work areas include analysis for the creation of a new waterways charity and the EU Soil Framework Directive. Previously he has worked in food and agricultural policy areas in Defra.
Simon Maxwell is a social researcher in Defra working on natural environment policy issues. Recent work has included analysis of the Natural Environment White Paper Short Online Survey consultation and development of guidance on using participatory and deliberative techniques in both monetary and non-monetary valuation. He is taking forward work on social impacts and social and cultural ecosystem services, and helping to develop and utilise the social research evidence base across natural environment policy areas.
